The Next Big Thing

THE NEXT BIG THING is a chain of book and author recommendations. Cryptozoology thriller novelist Kent Holloway  first tagged me.  I was also tagged by Rick Jones. When you're done here, please take the opportunity to introduce yourself to them, as well as to the five authors I've tagged below, after the interview.

1. What is the working title of your next book?
SOLAR ISLAND just came out yesterday, so I’ll go with that. But let me just say before we go any further, that technically my next book released will be THE PROPHET, which is a collaboration with SILVER author Steven Savile. It’s a short novel that adds some background to the Ogmios Team series, and I’m really excited about this story.

2. Where did the idea come from for the book?
The idea for SOLAR ISLAND came from fusing together two main ideas: 1) a concept known as “seasteading,” which is to live on the ocean in permanent floating facilities, and 2) alternative energy. From there I pictured a character who designed and built a floating island to collect solar energy, but then got carried away with the running of his own domain.

3. What genre does your book fall under?
Broadly it’s a thriller, more specifically some would say techno-thriller, science thriller or action-thriller.

4. What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?
Good ones!

5. What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
A madman uses a floating energy production platform as an opportunity to establish his own rogue nation.

6. Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
Neither. It’s been published by small press Seven Realms Publishing, a direct sale without an agent.

7. How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?
About a year.

8. What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
Fans of Michael Crichton, Clive Cussler, Preston & Child, Tom Clancy, Paul Garrison, James Rollins and Boyd Morrison might find something to like here.

9. Who or what inspired you to write this book?

The sun as our ultimate source of energy combined with the idea that much of our planet is covered in water with no direct oversight by any existing nation.

10. What else about the book might pique the reader’s interest?
It’s the third thriller in my Tara Shores series, following Wired Kingdom (2010) and kiDNApped (2011). The novels can be read perfectly well standalone, although there are a few subtle nuances that can be picked up on if they are read in order. Think how, in Cussler’s Dirk Pitt series, you have the recurring core characters and they occasionally reference their past capers, they get promoted, get a little bit older with each book, that kind of thing.

That concludes my edition of The Next Big Thing. Now, I'm going to tag five more authors:

Next week, on Wednesday, December 19th, they will be posting their own answers to these questions. I'd really appreciate you guys supporting my friends by clicking on their names and visiting their blogs to see how they answered it!

Thanks everyone and happy reading!

SOLAR ISLAND: December 11

On December 11, 2012, the sun will rise over new thriller SOLAR ISLAND!

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151237747351676&set=a.325043876675.155956.324099961675&type=1&theater

What is Solar Island?
An artificial island, roaming the ocean, harvesting the sun’s power…
An independent nation, ruled by a visionary genius…
A crime scene…
For more than a year, Solar Island, the creation of revolutionary engineer Dr. Jacob Lightner, has traversed the Pacific Ocean, reaping the sun’s endless bounty of energy and providing electricity to developing nations.  But is Lightner a benevolent genius, pioneering a new path to energy independence and sustainability? Or is he a power-hungry despot, intent on using the power of Solar Island to reshape the political landscape of the Pacific Rim, willing to murder anyone who gets in his way?
Responding to a cryptic message, FBI Special Agent Tara Shores goes undercover to untangle the web of intrigue and oppression that conceals Lightner’s true purpose.  But nothing can prepare her for the struggle that will test the limits of her physical, mental and emotional endurance…the battle to control Solar Island.

A moment of silence

I sat down to write a blog post, but nothing I was going to write about seemed as significant as the events that transpired on the east coast this week. In lieu of a business-as-usual post, I would like to take this moment to reflect on the tragedy that Hurricane Sandy brought to so many. The storm has passed, but in its wake is devastation and, for some, misery, that will take a lifetime from which to recover. With the official U.S. death toll reaching 74 at the time of this writing, and monetary damages initially estimated at $15-20 billion, now revised upward to as high as $50 billion, it’s clear that the eastern seaboard will never be the same.

Pictures, before and after:
http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/sandy-before-and-after-photos/957846

As more and more individual stories emerge from the superstorm, one stands out to me in particular. From the “what the heck was he thinking” file, the mind-boggling account of the captain of the HMS Bounty replica ship who decided to set sail from Connecticut bound for Florida on Monday morning with an inexperienced crew in a 50-year-old ship based on a 250-year-old-design:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/sns-rt-us-storm-sandy-bountybre8a105d-20121101,0,2999707.story
The captain himself has still not been found, and one crew member is dead. The other fourteen crew survived after a risky rescue off North Carolina by the Coast Guard:

http://boingboing.net/2012/10/29/rescue-video-sandy-sinks-hms.html
I doubt that way back in 1789, when Christian Fletcher decided to wrest Her Majesty’s Ship from its captain, William Bligh, that 223 years in the future sailors would still be losing their lives at sea on the Bounty.
Wishing the best to all those affected by Sandy,

Rick

BLOOD HARBOR crowd-funded on Kickstarter!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1453332805/blood-harbor-a-novel-of-suspense?ref=live

Rick Chesler's new suspense novel, BLOOD HARBOR, has been successfully crowd-funded on Kickstarter, for publication in February 2013 in e-book, paperback and audiobook formats.

                                          Blood Harbor

Matt Knox managed to reach middle age without ever breaking a law. So far as he is aware, he has never transcended the law, ever, no matter how trivial. He will not step outside the lines of a crosswalk. He refuses to take the "creative" tax write-offs suggested to him by professional advisers. He will not opt to get away with anything simply because he can.

Until now.

When a local crime gang forces Matt into helping them rob a museum in order to take advantage of his holier-than-thou reputation, the floodgates Matt has carefully erected on the river of his true self come crashing down. His first targets: the criminals who unleashed his monster within. Their gruesome demises put a charming, California seaside town on extreme edge. But once the common criminals are dealt with, Matt struggles to put a stop to his new-found addiction, and a local cop, recently fired for being on the take, fights to convince the townspeople that Matt "The Saint" Knox is not at all what he seems.

BLOOD HARBOR Kickstarter campaign: FUNDED!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1453332805/blood-harbor-a-novel-of-suspense

Good news, suspense fans! The kickstarter campaign for my brand new novel, BLOOD HARBOR, has met its funding goal and so the book will be published in early 2013 (January for backers, February official release). As of this writing there are still 9 days remaining in the campaign, though, so if you'd like to get involved by making a pledge, you can still get your name in the Acknowledgements section of the book, as well as have a signed paperback mailed to you, or even narrate a chapter of the audiobook edition! Here's a description of the novel:

Matt Knox managed to reach middle age without ever breaking a law. So far as he is aware, he has never transcended the law, ever, no matter how trivial. He will not step outside the lines of a crosswalk. He refuses to take the "creative" tax write-offs suggested to him by professional advisers. He will not opt to get away with anything simply because he can.
Until now.

When a local crime gang forces Matt into helping them rob a museum in order to take advantage of his holier than thou reputation, the floodgates Matt has carefully erected on the river of his true self come crashing down.

If that sounds like your cup of tea, stop by the campaign on kickstarter, where you can essentially pre-order a copy with some extra perks:
